I've been going to JEM's for almost 4 years now and won't go anywhere else in Bloomington! I have NEVER EVER had a bad hair cut or experience here. The prices are actually under what is normally charged in town which is nice on my pocketbook!
Great Place! – What a fabulous place! I love my stylist, I am entertaining the idea of trying out the massage therapist because of recommendations my friends have made. This hair salon does a fantastic job for your money, and they give me (and everyone) their time and attention. From the customers I see, they it doesn't matter what your age is, they seem to cater to all ages and styles. The girls, even the newer ones, look like they are busy with people they seem to know or have been customers for some time.
Do not go here! – I scheduled appointments at Jem's for myself and my wedding party to get updo's and manicures for the big day. When my experience started, I was very hopeful it would be a good one. I went in for the "mock-up" of my wedding hairstyle a few weeks before the wedding, and after looking through their books and the hairstylist attempting a few styles, we ended up with a beautiful hair style... The experience went down from there.
My Maid of Honor and I went in for manicures and pedicures the day before the wedding. Mine looked pretty good, but the girl doing my MOH's nails told her they couldn't do a french manicure because her nails were too short (they were longer than mine, which the other manicurist was able to do without a problem). Then she applied too many layers and left smudges of paint around the cuticle. Ultimately, she redid them and they looked fine.
Here's where the real trouble started. Late afternoon the DAY BEFORE my wedding, I got a call from them when I was on my way to the rehearsal. Needless to say, I was a little scattered because of the timing. They called asking about one of my bridesmaid's appointment times. The phone was breaking out, I was in a rush, and in the midst of last minute planning, so when they called to "verify" one of my girls times I just sort of agreed they had it right, assuming they were meaning that one of them had an appointment at the same time as me and that they had just given the wrong name. I had verified that we would have two bridesmaids going in at 10, the other two at 11:30 three times on my last phone call with them. On the phone they DID NOT say they were changing the time, just "verifying" it. I should have realized it was suspicious that they only called about one girl. The next day when I went in, they had everyone's time right except for hers. SO, I spent about a half hour desperately trying to get ahold of her and having to send my mom to her hotel room to get her up, as her phone had been on silent because THEY messed up the appointment times.
Then, as this was going on, I realized that my hair was being done differently than at the "mock-up." I mentioned this to the stylist who was VERY condescending and kept insisting I just didn't remember. I had to have my husband post pictures he had taken on facebook, and borrow a smart phone to convince her. While I was in the midst of doing this, she offered me three books and said that one of them had the picture I liked first time. I informed her she did not give me the right book, and again, she kept trying to convince me I didn't remember. Finally, another staff member saw I wasn't happy, and offered me several other books. In this stack I immediately found the right book and picture. While my stylist acknowledged it was the picture, she did not admit any fault.
Excellent salon and stylist! – I have to respond to the above comment by psycholot just to say JEM's did our wedding over a year ago and they were fantastic. I don't know what this woman was talking about but it could have been the pressure of her day. As you can see from my review back in March, this salon is on the top of my list and the lists of many others in town.
I found the people at JEM's very nice and I was very pleased with the services. The first visit was fantastic and Bani is a great stylist. She talented, funny, and a great person to talk with. The haircut was excellent and she knew just what to do. The charge for my cut and color was between $30-40 less than what the other salons of equal reputation were previously charging me in Bloomington-Normal. Some salons in Bloomington had the nerve to charge me over $100. for the cut/color/style...Can you believe it! I found the same quality and had a much more enjoyable time with Bani and saved $$$. Thanks Bani, see you soon!
Talented way to do nails – A girl named Petra did my nails for Halloween. She did a beautiful job on hand painting pumpkins on my nails. She was patient and creative. This is a great way to decorate your nails up for the upcoming seasons.
Great! – A very talented young woman started working there and she does great highlights! Her name is Petra and she's hip and easy to work with. I met her when she was a student at Midwest College of Cosmetology and she did GREAT work there! A nice addition to the Jem's hair team.
What a Great Cut without going broke – My friend recommended her hairstylist at Jems. I was afraid to go, but I take strength and I made the appointment. I am EXTREMELY HAPPY I DID !!!. Jean did a great job on my hair. The salons services was absolutely impeccable and staff was friendly and outgoing. It was just a wonderful experience. Best of all, since I mentioned my visit to others I work with at a local hospital in Bloomington, many of my co-workers have also said what a great cut and color they also got at Jem's. A friend who went to Cindy at Jem's, loved her highlights. She was very impressed with Cindy's skill. Best of all I got a great color at a price much less than I paid at a salon that thinks it all that!!! After all, the bottom line is to be happy, have a great cut, and not spend my entire paycheck doing it.
The Perfect Cut and Style – I'm living in Chicago now, but still make sure to stop into JEM's to get my hair done when back visiting Bloomington/Normal. The stylist give me the exact cut I envision (and I'm not an easy customer - ha ha). I highly recommend Mary and the JEM's girls!
Very good cut for B/N – This is a great salon. Very professional, but laidback. Also, it's not a ridiculous cost for services. I've gotten good color and cut. I've also gotten a lot of updos done there that were awesome. I'd recommend Mary as a stylist. The only drawback is they tend to run behind on appointments and (logically) can take a LONG time to do color and cut.
